Auction Action by Altan Insights: August 31, 2021

This week on Auction Action, the Altan Insights team virtually visits Goldin Auctions to review their August Summer Card and Memorabilia Auction. Note that all realized auction prices include a 20% buyer’s premium.

Basketball

Asset: 2003 UD Exquisite Collection RPA /99 LeBron James (BGS 9)

Goldin: $2,029,5000

Collectable (BGS 8.5): $1,300,000

Review: Collectable is scheduled to IPO their LeBron /99 RPA on September 2nd and investors will have a record-breaking sale to use as a comp. The Collectable example has impressive subgrades and actually carries a 9 average grade overall. Both the Collectable and Goldin cards have a 9.5 for centering and a 9 for edges. The RPA sold by Goldin has better corners and surface though- with an 8.5 and 10 respectively- compared to Collectable’s which carries an 8 and 9.5. Goldin’s sale shattered the previous record for this card in any grade and set a new standard for the /99 LeBron RPA series. The previous record was $1.8 million for a card sold in July 2020.

Asset: 2003 UD Exquisite Collection Patch Auto LeBron Jame /100 (BGS 8.5)

Goldin: $93,480

Rally (BGS 8): $46,000

Review: Although the Rally card carries a lower grade than the example sold at Goldin, the auction house result shows stability for the RPA LeBron overall. This Goldin sale matches the price of another BGS 8.5 they sold in March. However, the card sold at the March event carried a higher overall average subgrade compared to this recent sale. Rally’s card IPO’d for $34,000 last August and has climbed 35.29% overall but fell 8% in its last trading session.

Asset: 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie Card (PSA 10)

Goldin: $295,200

Collectable: $390,000

Rally (Exit): $72,000

Review: The Goldin result exceeds the prices struck at both the July Card Auction and their June event but is a slight decline from a sale earlier this month. Goldin sold a rookie MJ for $270,600 in both June and July but the Jordan recovered on August 7th as a PSA 10 sold for $319,800. Collectable’s card has climbed 1.3% over the last thirty days but is down -33.9% in the past six months. The platform IPO’d their MJ rookie for $100,000 and the PSA 10 has gained 290% overall since opening.

Asset: 1969 Topps Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Rookie Card

Goldin: $31,980

Rally: $50,000

Review: Rally IPO’d their Kareem rookie card for $27,500 in November and the card has gained 81.8% overall. The card is scheduled to trade again on August 31st after it gained 0.75% during its last session in May. Goldin sold another PSA 8 for $33,600 earlier this month. Prices for Kareem’s rookie in PSA 8 peaked at $75,030 at Goldin in March and this is the lowest sale for the card in this grade in 2021.

Baseball

Asset: 1908 Ty Cobb E98 Card

Goldin: $31,980

Rally: $58,000

Review: Rally’s E98 dropped -17.14% during its last trading session but the Goldin result is a slight uptrend for the red-back Cobb. Goldin sold a PSA 9 copy on August 7th for $31,2000 after selling another example in June for $28,800.

Football

Asset: 2017 Panini National Treasures RPA /99 (PSA 9)

Goldin: $161,130

Collectable (BGS 8.5): $135,040

Review: Collectable’s card carries a strong average subgrade of 8.75. Both cards are from the same /99 set and Collectable’s has dropped -15.6% overall since IPO. The fractional Mahomes is up 2.3% in the last week and investors should continue to follow price action as the football season nears.

Asset: 2000 Playoff Contenders Football Sealed Hobby Box (12 packs)

Goldin: $36,900

Collectable: $33,713

Review: Goldin sold a different box for $31,980 on August 7th and this sale represents the continuation of an uptrend that started earlier this summer. Sales reached $62,730 in March but then tumbled back to $30,000 in May. With the 2021 NFL season approaching and Tom Brady seeking his seventh Super Bowl, the hobby box famous for potentially carrying his rookie card has started to recover. Collectable’s sealed box is up 45% since IPO and has climbed 26.1% in the last month.

Asset: 1984 Topps John Elway Rookie Card (PSA 10)

Goldin: $5,842.50

Collectable (2 cards): $26,775

Review: The Goldin sale is a steep discount to the Collectable basket but it does represent a positive move for Elway rookie cards overall. After sales reached $10,455 at Goldin in March, prices slipped all the way to $4,500 in May. This is the first PSA 10 to sell at Goldin since that May result and the card closed over $1,000 higher. Collectable’s basket is down -10% since IPO although recent performance has been strong. The pair of PSA 10 Elway’s is up 38% over the last month.

Soccer

Asset: 2004-05 Panini Sports Megacracks Lionel Messi Rookie Card (PSA 10)

Goldin: $14,400

Rally: $35,000

Collectable (2 cards. 1 of the 2 is a BGS 9.5): $66,700

Review: Collectable’s basket features one PSA 10 and one BGS 9.5 while Rally’s offering is a single PSA 10. The Rally example filled its market cap with 502 investors and is expected to begin trading within the next three months. The Collectable basket has dropped -27.5% since IPO and is down -7.1% in the last month.

Pokémon

Asset: Pokemon Jungle 1st Edition Sealed Booster Box

Goldin: $12,300

Rally: $27,600

Review: This Jungle Box sale matches the price paid for another sealed box at Goldin’s Elite Auction in May. Rally’s box IPO’d for $34,500 in January and the first edition booster has slipped -20% overall.

Asset: Pokemon Team Rocket 1st Edition Sealed Booster Box

Goldin: $11,685

Rally: $27,600

Review: The Team Rocket box dropped -30% in its trading session on June 30th and still sits above the price struck at Goldin. Rally’s box IPO’d for $28,500 in March and sales reached $27,500 in April but recent sales have closed at less than half the Spring valuation. Pokemon boxes have made limited appearances at Goldin and this is only the second Team Rocket sealed wax to sell at the auction house. Goldin sold their only other first edition box for $18,000 on May 22nd. Both the Jungle and Team Rocket boxes sold at Goldin this month helped support a good cause as 10% of the winning bid is being donated to Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors
