Welcome to Altan Insights’ first virtual visit to the top auction houses in search of active and upcoming offerings that are relevant to the fractional investment community. Here’s what we’re watching this week:

Heritage Auctions is running its annual 2021 Winter Platinum Night Sports Auction. The auction includes over 1,000 pieces of sports cards and memorabilia. All features will strike their final price February 27-28th. All bids shown below include buyer’s premium.

In December 2019, Rally offered a Honus Wagner T206 Sweet Caporal Series card for $520,000. The card has since reached a market cap of $900,000 and last traded on 2/11/2021, seeing a 20% gain during the session. Heritage Auctions is featuring a similar Wagner from the same series which has currently attracted a bid of $780,000.

Collectable is scheduled to IPO a 1954 Hank Aaron Rookie Card (PSA 8.5) for $120,000 in the coming months. Heritage Auctions has a PSA 9 version of Hammerin’ Hank’s Rookie available for bidding until 2/27. The most recent bid placed on 2/25 pushed the card to $456,000.

Rally has a 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth (PSA 8) that was initially offered for $77,000 but has since traded-up to $110,000. Heritage has a card of the same version and grade currently at a bid price of $186,000.

The Sandy Koufax 1955 Topps PSA 8.5 on Collectable received plenty of attention from the start, after funding with 260 investors in just one minute on January 6th with a $23,000 market cap. Just one month later on February 6th the card received a buyout offer of $80,000, a 104.5% ROI. Investors rejected the buyout offer and the card is now scheduled to begin trading soon. Heritage has a card from the same set graded SCG 9 priced at $216,000 through 15 bids.

Collectable will IPO the first fractional Frank Robinson card in the coming months with a basket featuring two of his 1955 Topps rookie cards, both graded PSA 9, for $76,000 in total. Heritage currently features one card of the same set and grade with a current bid of $45,600.

The 1939 Play Ball Rookie Card of Ted Williams was initially offered by Rally (graded SGC 8.5) in August 2020, with a market cap of $28,000. The secondary market has since pushed the card up to $35,000. Collectable will IPO their own Williams rookie (graded PSA 8) on March 5th with a $32,000 market cap. This is the same card and grade as the one currently available at Heritage with bidding at $49,200 heading into the weekend.

Collectable offered a 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky (PSA 9) on 12/10/20 with a $67,000 market cap. Heritage currently has a card with the same grade priced 56.7% higher, with the most recent bid clearing the $100K threshold up to $105,000.

On 2/25/21 Collectable announced a surprise IPO featuring two 2000 Playoff Contenders Tom Brady Rookies for $90,000 in total. Rally also offered a Brady of the same grade (BGS Mint 9/Auto 10) for $45,000. Heritage has a single Brady rookie from the same set graded PSA 8 currently sitting at a $49,200 bid price.

Rally is scheduled to IPO their first Walter Payton piece, his 1976 Topps Rookie (PSA 10). The card will have a market cap of $65,000 and is one of 51 Gem Mint cards of the set. Heritage is also featuring one of Payton’s rookies with a grade of SGC Gold Label Pristine 100. At the moment, bidding sits at $132,000.

The Michael Jordan 1986 Fleer card has been one of the hottest offerings of the 2020-2021 season. Rally initially IPO’d their card for $40,000 and sold it for $71,640. Collectable then IPO’d a Jordan rookie of the same grade for $100,000. That card has since hit the secondary market and has a current market cap of $540,000. Heritage Auctions has a Fleer MJ currently priced at $576,000.

Collectable offered a 1933 dual-signed baseball by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig for $72,000. The ball has since traded down -18.1% to a $59,000 cap. Heritage will close its Auction on a dual-signed ball by Ruth/Gehrig for $780,000. The Heritage ball is graded PSA/DNA NM-MT+ 8.5 and the Collectable ball is graded PSA/DNA 7.5 with Beckett grading Ruth’s signature an 8 and Gehrig’s a 7.

Otis offered a 2013 Immaculate Collection Giannis Antetokounmpo PSA 10 for $90,000 which is expected to begin trading soon. Heritage is featuring a similar card although their version does not have a grade for the autograph. The most recent bid is $39,600.

Collectable will IPO two 1980 Scoring Leader cards (PSA 8) which feature Larry Bird, Julius Erving, and Magic Johnson for $27,500. Heritage has a single card of the same set/grade currently priced at $10,500. They also have a PSA 9 example nearing the $50K threshold, with recent bids pushing its total to $49,200.

This past week, Otis held an IPO on a 1972 Julius Erving Rookie Card (PSA 9) with a $15,800 market cap. The same version and grade of this Dr. J rookie is also available at Heritage with bidding at $31,200 heading into the final hours.

While it’s the MJ card that has carried the torch for this set, the 1986 Fleer Basketball Sealed Wax Box already found its way onto the fractional marketplace by way of both Collectable and Rally. Rally offered their sealed box with a market cap of $165,000, followed shortly by Collectable who offered theirs for $183,750. Both sit well below the current bid for a box on Heritage, which is priced at $264,000 heading into the final day.

Rally is planning to IPO another sealed box- this one, a 1980 Topps Box with a $78,000 market cap. Currently, Heritage has a box from the same year nearing that range, with recent bids pushing the set most-known for Magic Johnson and Larry Bird’s rookie years to $66,000.
